As part of KMP’s support of the Year in Industry initiative we took on two new students in the summer. This is KMP’s 9th year in the program and the two students are more than 6 months into their placement.

Graham Smith – Junior Developer

Working at KMP has been a non-stop tour around the technical world. I have done so much over the last 6 months ranging from coding for API’s, systems administration, becoming the “printer guy” to cleaning the air conditioning filters (someone has to do it).

Before I came to KMP my confidence in my coding was less than brilliant, but with help and support over the last 6 months it has improved significantly, which will be a great help to me as I go into my final year. Working in a production environment has shown me how projects actually go live and how they can be configured, which is something that is seldom seen in the theoretical and academic world. Being at KMP has also inspired me to look deeper into social media and how this can be applied to various scenarios that I would not have thought of before.

I’d have to say my highlight was completing my first Facebook application, I really put blood, sweat and tears into the project and eventually got a good end result. There were some complex obstacles to overcome, which on reflection provided some of the best experience that I would never have got if I hadn’t come on placement. If that wasn’t enough, then I got employee of the month in February.

Over the coming 6 months I think I’ll see more of what I have learned, and tried not to forget, put into practice and built on even further. As time has gone on I have been given more responsibility, which I see as a natural progression that will probably continue.

My recommendations to future students, in the technical area: be prepared for quite an intense and varied role. Unlike other placement opportunities you will be working on various tasks, often at the same time, so time management is important. Don’t be like me and not drink tea or coffee and therefore not have to make rounds, this could very well mean you won’t get the job…

Tim Brook – Junior Front End Developer

Over the past 6 months at KMP I’ve worked on various projects from small page amends to dynamic websites and emails viewed by hundreds of thousands of people. My knowledge and understanding of HTML & CSS has developed incredibly and I am now starting to dive into HTML5 and jQuery. I have also learnt a lot of skills that only develop by working in studio, from time management to the development of a project, from the initial pitch to it finally going live.

The highlight of my first 6 months here at KMP would have to be completing my first WordPress website build. It was a very steep learning curve but with help and support from the team around me the end result was spot on!

What do the next 6 months have in store for me? Well, I’ll be brushing up my coding & design skills and as these develop, I’ll be working closely with other creatives to build more interactive and engaging sites so watch this space!

My advice for future creative students – first impressions last, so make sure that the first brew is pants! The requests will still fly in but you can always remind them of what happened last time!

Here at KMP we are extremely proud and impressed by their continuing development in the company and are looking forward to seeing how much further they improve in the next 6 months with KMP’s expertise guiding them.

Well it seems that many companies still do not believe in the power of the Internet and in particular the changes in marketing and customer relations that have happened as a result of web 2.0.

Technology is now available to trawl the Internet for any mentions of your company or brand and monitor the conversations going on. We can even categorise these conversations by “Sentiment” as to whether they are positive negative or neutral mentions. (In fact a simple search on Google around your company/brand name and obvious key words on the main search and blogs search will give you some idea). But then what ? Well in today’s world,if you know people are talking about your brand then it follows that you must enter a dialogue with them.

Let’s take, for example, the follow up to my last blog post regarding “Trying to recruit a .Net developer in Stockport” which I published in August. Despite their promises, the company involved, RMI Recruitment in Leeds, failed to suggest any suitable candidates as a replacement for the first candidate who was hired but left after a few weeks. I sent an email to the managing director last week asking for a refund on the basis that they had not performed against their promise. I got no reply … nothing. Nada!

As a result I believe that I have been treated shabbily. In the olden days I may have thought about the small claims court or some such redress. But in today’s world the first thing I want to do is express myself and let everyone – in particular other potential customers how badly I have been treated and that I didn’t think that I got value for Every company now needs to contemplate how they should manage user feedback on their products and services in this public arena. The power has shifted and there needs to be a recognition that to protect your brand you need to do something.

This conversation management process falls into the category of Social Media Marketing. It is now very important for companies to be transparent and have open conversations with their customers. Other customers will then not only see the negative comments but the fact that you are doing something about the complaints and that you are being responsive and responsible. This is hugely attractive behaviour for the consumer and your brand will gain respect. You can engage your customers in a blog or a forum (or both) and even reach out to the complainants with old fashioned face to face PR.

Lets see what happens with RMI Recruitment over the next few weeks…..

You would think that this would be an easy task wouldn’t you. Five Universities all pumping out IT graduates. And Manchester is supposedly second only to the capital for digital companies.

Well recently for us it has been very difficult. Our recruitment agencies haven’t been able to find us a suitable candidate with the right skills, experience and qualifications at the right price. Moreover we had a bad experience with a Leeds based recruiter RMI Recruitment UK, who helped us to hire a senior .Net developer. The candidate lasted exactly 5 weeks, got into difficulty with the development and then left for another job. RMI Recruitment UK refused to refund our money but agreed to replace the candidate free of charge. To date the agency hasn’t been able to find us a replacement. That was 6 weeks ago.

This whole debacle has cost us the recruitment fee, the salary costs (without a result) and the cost of doing the job properly by one of our existing developers. All in all we calculated that this “mistake” cost us over £13,000. Something like 80% of the inward calls to our agency are recruitment consultants touting their wares and quite frankly we don’t feel comfortable that any of them give us value for money.

We have found from experience that clever, self motivated people are best suited to the organisation. We would want to pay this new developer about £25,000 based on skills and experience. Reporting to the Head of Development the candidate will be responsible for
• Developing code to a fulfill a specified scope of work
• Feed input into the design process
• Feed into the process of constant improvements

They must have a digital agency experience, a good understanding of C#, Ajax, SQL server, XML, web services, CSS level 2, experience of CMS systems (Sitecore CMS would be an advantage). Java websphere and Domino skills would also be desirable, but not essential.

We are now convinced that the way forward is to blog about this and to use the social networks to try to attract our candidate. So if you know anyone who would like to work for us in web development, or can suggest any useful blogs or social sites where we can get in touch with good candidates please let us know by contacting us below.

Obviously this isn’t a signal for recruitment agencies to get in touch
