Realising the Potential of Web Content - David Kinsella
Recognising the difference between content and design
Web design is the art of presenting web content in a suitable way. When the design and content are irrevocably linked, the content is only suitable for a single purpose. Separation of presentation from content is fundamental to avoiding time-consuming re-writes.
Going beyond the boundaries
Having a web-presence is important but it doesn’t mean all of your content should stay within the confines of your website. Sometimes it’s easier to take your message to the places where people are already browsing than to try and persuade them to come and visit. Syndication of content opens up a wealth of opportunities for promoting your business. It also opens up a can of worms concerning keeping your brand identity intact.
Giving context to content
Semantic markup may seem like a slightly technical issue to address, but in reality the benefits of content authors knowing the basics of HTML are worth consideration. Web content is increasingly consumed, processed and aggregated by software before it reaches a human. Semantic markup helps software to understand the context of your content and can ensure that it reaches relevant readers.
